Feeding time at Turtle Farm

Here is what feeding time at Turtle Farm looks like. I cut up a tiny bit of raw fish and a spinach leaf and float it in a bowl. Then I put in some turtles and let them eat for awhile - until they seem to be finished - then I take them out and put in another batch! After they have all had a chance, they go into another dish of water and I empty out the food dish. I'm not sure they really are eating much - they snap at it but rarely do I see anything go into their mouth. Maybe they are eating pieces so tiny that I can't see them. Maybe they are just practicing eating, as the information I have read says they don't need to eat for 4 to 5 days after they are hatched. At any rate, I didn't want to starve them so decided to try them out with some food. We have 12 hatched now. The other eggs don't seem to be doing anything, so maybe this is all that are going to hatch. One egg was cracked and I didn't see any movement so I opened it and there was a fully formed turtle but it was dead. So the rest of the eggs may be that way also. We will wait awhile to see if anything more happens with them. Meanwhile - 12 is a plenty large family of turtle babies to care for! I am going to fill a bigger container with water today so they have more room to swim around.

Karen, How funny, to check your blog tonight and see the last couple posts with these little turtles. I hadn't looked since they were first starting to crack. You will be busy....having your family increase by 12 so fast!! Interesting to say the least! Linda
