Swimming turtles

We now have 7 turtles hatched. Here are some of them having their first bath. They seemed to like the water and know how to swim well from very early in life!

Back to the nursery, baby turtles! I took out the eggs that were not hatching yet and left the ones that are partially out of the egg. They will probably be out by tomorrow evening - or at least some more of them will be.

Here is the first little guy that hatched - he has been living in this dish and swimming around for the past two days. We put a rock in there for him to climb up on but he likes it in the water better and I have never seen him climb on the rock by himself - only when we put him up there. He is about 2 inches long from nose to tail - maybe a tiny bit longer when he sticks his neck way out. These turtles can't pull their head completely into their shell like some turtles can - their shell isn't big enough or their head is too big, I'm not sure which. The information I have found on the Internet said they don't need fed for 4 or 5 days or until their yolk sack is completely absorbed. It is just kind of a little filmy thing hooked to their shell underneath, kind of like a belly button and umbilical cord on a human baby.

They seem pretty groggy when they're right out of the shell, don't they? The little guy that's been out the longest just LOVES that water, doesn't he!? :) He was a cute little thing...but I'm glad that I don't have to touch him. *laugh*

How exciting! I'm behind on my computer communication so just saw all the pictures, videos etc of the turtles right now. I would like to see the longer video if you could send it to me. I envisioned them a little bigger when they hatched. Just for the record, I'm not at all surprised you were successful at hatching turtles...just par for the course with all your accomplishments!

I wish you could hear the giggles from Sadie as she watches the oldest turtle haste off of the rock into the water! He is quite cute. Wish you could send them in the mail like they can chicks...we'd take a few! :)
