Here is what is happening at our house today. 5 of our turtle eggs are starting to hatch. It is a very slow process and sometimes they make negative progress. Three had their heads stuck out of the shell when we got up this morning, then when we looked again, only two heads were visible - I guess one decided inside his little shell was a pretty nice place to be! It was interesting that these first 5 all started to hatch within about 8 hours of each other. I decided to dig up the eggs that were covered up with dirt and put all of them on damp paper towels. It just seemed cruel to think of them coming out of the egg and having to force their way through all that dirt to even see light! I know in nature it would have been that way - another reason was we couldn't watch them if they were underground doing their hatching. There are 6 eggs that appear to be empty - so that cuts our number of possible hatchlings down to 28. (We have 4 eggs adopted out in Laramie and Riverton - I don't know if they are hatching yet or not!) We took a better video where this little guy in the corner egg looks like he smiles for the camera - but it is too long and wouldn't upload to the blog. I will update here when and if one ever gets out of the egg!
