This is a mystery picture. It is a harbor seal on a little ice berg that was floating near our ship. The seals are kind of shy and they would slip into the water almost before you could see them, so we had to look sharp and carefully with the binoculars to sight them. A lot of people never even caught a glimpse of them, but we saw several. This picture was zoomed in and blown up so you could see the seal. It wasn't near this evident in the real picture.
This picture is very unclear because it was taken telephoto quite a ways away, then I blew it up so you could see more than a few specks. These are puffins. We were thrilled to see this flock floating in the water. They are unusual looking birds with lots of color if you could see them in real life. There are a lot of glaciers that never reach the ocean. They are up in the mountains and valleys and grow and receed without breaking off into the water.
Of all the pictures we took the whole trip, I think this was my favorite. We met another cruise ship, the Norweigen Pearl, in Glacier Bay. Both ships were going very slowly so the water was calm and the reflection was so pretty. Everyone on the other ship waved to the people on our ship, so we waved back.

This is the next best thing to being there! I was just thinking about who might like to go with us the next time around. If you take a cruise in Aug, it is still warm (except when surrounded by ice and glaciers), and is very reasonable in price. Hmmmm....sounds like a great idea!!
It is funny that when you pass another cruise ship everyone's instinct is to wave back at the other ship! When leaving port in Ft.Lauderdale, the people who live along the channel all wave, the little boats captains honk and wave, and it is quite a departure!
My goodness those cruise ships are HUGE! I've NEVER had a desire to go on a cruise, but I have to admit that looking at your pictures is beginning to change my mind!! It looks like it was just absolutely beautiful! And with everything you guys did on that particular cruise, I might have to try THAT cruise some time. :)
I had to laugh at the picture of you all bundled up, Karen! It reminded me of many of the winter pictures that my mom has of my brother and I when we were little. She didn't want us to get cold, so she bundled us up until it was just our eyes peeking out. :) *laugh* I'm glad that you were able to shed some layers as the day wore on.
Puffins...aren't they cool!? I had never heard of them until a couple years ago when a professor I worked with traveled to a place up in Canada (over by Maine) and visited a place that was FULL of puffins! She said that they got to sit in this little hut and that the puffins came all around them. Wouldn't that be neat? :) Actually, all of the wildlife/sealife that you saw would be an awesome thing to see in real life. Maybe someday... :)
